Things To Do

Many of the recommendations for off site activities are from guide books or ‘word of mouth’  so not from personal recommendation)

Murcia. The region’s capital, Murcia, is one of the most important and fastest growing cities in Spain and has much to see and do. The city has a long history dating back to 831ad and flourished under the rule of its arab founders. The city really began to grow in the 16th century when it became of a centre of baroque architecture. Many fine churches, and the impressive cathedral with its 92 metre tower were built in this period, leaving the city with a splendid architectural heritage that draws visitors to this day. The city experienced a further building boom in the 19th century, a period which saw such distinctive buildings as the roman theatre, the town hall and the casino being built. The city has good shopping and a wide selection of museums, restaurants and bars.

Cartagena. A trip to Cartagena is not complete without a stroll through the shopping area. A good starting point could be the newly rebuilt port, with its magnificent ancient wall and new marina and bars. Past the former town hall building (now under repairs) is the Calle Mayor, the main street of the old quarter. Lined by traditional shops and restaurants, here you can get an ice cream and stroll down to the port, sit down and quietly watch the world go by, or follow the flow towards its heart and the numerous shops it shelters, from traditional instruments or sailing equipment to Mango, Zara, Pull and Bear, Springfield, Benetton, Massimo Dutti…

Cartagena harbour tours are available – 3 hour tours from 10-1 during popular holiday seasons.  Discover the so-considered best natural harbor in the Western Mediterranean, but also takes you to its main defensive fortress, in a true trip along history (20 € per person/2022) info@mediterraneancartagenatours.com

Los Belones. This is the nearest village. Turn right at main gates and continue over roundabout and under main road. Lots of restaurants, cafes and several bars. Cheaper than on site.

Cabo de Palos. Cabo de Palos is a small fishing village approximately 15 minutes drive away towards La Manga Strip and a favourite retreat of visitors to La Manga Club featuring a huge lighthouse overlooking the Mediterranean. Sundays are a good day to go, there is a large market in the morning (9.00 - 2.00pm) just a few minutes walk to the seafront and there are numerous harbour front restuarants where you can sit in the sun and watch the world go by.   Two large supermarkets with good fish counters. Pick up a roast chicken form the ‘pollo man’ on a Sunday morning from the ‘Upper’ car park.

La Manga Strip. The Mar Menor or ‘little sea’ is the inland sea separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga del Mar Menor or La Manga Strip. The La Manga Peninsular is over 28 kms long and stretches from the fishing village of Cabo de Palos to the salt flats of San Pedro del Pinatar.  Only one road take you along the STRIP which although very busy in July and August can seem almost deserted outside these times.   Both sides of La Manga Strip have something to offer.  The Mediterranean side with its magnificent sandy beaches and the Mar Menor with its warm shallow waters, that are ideal for children and for enjoying your favourite water sports.   During the summer months you´ll find various different water sports available at many different locations along the strip including waterskiing, jet biking, sailing and pedalos.  For the youngsters try Peke Park which you will find down opposite Plaza Bohemia on La Manga Strip. Open only during the evening, this is an open-air amusement park with rides and fairground games.  It works on a card system which you buy at the kiosk that entitles you to go on the rides until your credit runs out on the card.

Archena and Fortuna Leana Spas

Two of the Murcia region’s best kept secrets are the natural spas located at Archena and Fortuna. Mineral rich waters flow from underground springs and are said to have curative powers for a variety of ailments, including arthritic disorders and rheumatic illnesses. The thermal springs at Archena were first discovered more than 2000 years ago by the romans, and have drawn people seeking rest, recuperation or cures for a variety of illnesses for centuries.
